True Pictures, 2024-ongoing
These “True Pictures” pieces are presented with both photos and text organized on a grid… which we associate with specificity and clarity, but in these I purposefully prevent the viewer from arriving at an “aha” or a way to ‘yes, that makes sense.” I choose from images I have made over the years, and I think of them as “chronologies” because they posit that the photographs may be related in, or through, time, rather than in a single moment or similar subject matter. The text "redirects" a viewer to think about the images in the context of something larger, something that evolves, and changes. But even those readings could be false as that depends on an assumed veracity, which I have subverted. They resemble story boards and if one thinks of them like that, they give a strangely calming and contemplative feeling. It’s specific yet simultaneously mysterious. They let you have an experience which is vaguely theatrical yet never taxing or threatening. The photographs, which are each straightforward and clear, have become slippery. I have recently started to rework the series, so the text is both English and Spanish, and the bilingual version is shown next to the English only version. My goal was not to connect with Spanish only speakers, because unfortunately, viewers in any galley where I might have work are probably English only speakers, and if a viewer is bilingual, they don't need the Spanish version. Rather I live in a community in which Hispanic families are an important part, and my intent is to keep that in front of English only speakers, to stress the importance of a community in which all people are welcome and can speak with each other.
